
Local Authorities need to be representative of key groups within their area by including people who are committed to attend and participate in meetings for the benefit of residents and community members.

Local Authorities
- Are required under legislation with compliance guidelines on their functions
- Receive a meeting allowance (unless a Council staff member)
- Make recommendations to Council about issues in their community
- Are delegated to determine how LA Project money is spent in their community
- Are required to have a minimum of four meetings per year
- Are required to abide by the Council's code of conduct.
Nominations for Local Authority members for each community are announced publicly when they become available, Nominations are open for 28 days and are followed by a community election, if required. Please see the Council Service Manager for more information.

What happens after I submit my Deputation Request?
- The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will advise the meeting Chairperson of the receipt of a deputation request.
- The Chairperson will consider the request and advise the CEO of acceptance or refusal of the request.
- Where there are multiple requests for a deputation on the same issue, we will advise parties of this and reduce the number of deputation requests.
- The requestor will be advised in writing of the acceptance or otherwise and provided with the details of the time and date of the meeting.

It is recommended that you contact the local community to confirm that the meetings will occur as meetings may be postponed due to cultural business or weather conditions.

Local Authority Allowances are established by the Minister for Local Government. On the 29 January 2016, the Minister set the allowances for Local Authorities based on revenue units as follows:
- Chair, if eligible, 143 revenue units
- other eligible members 107 revenue units.
Following an annual review, the monetary value of a revenue unit for 2019-20 is $1.21 (rounded to the nearest dollar).
