The core functions of Night Patrol are to provide basic services such as safe transportation, diversion from contact with the criminal justice system, and intervention to prevent disorder in communities.
During 2008–09, 13 Night Patrol services were operational in 11 locations: Atitjere, Engawala, Lajamanu (two patrols: a men’s and a women’s), Laramba, Nturiya, Nyirripi, Pmara Jutunta, Willowra, Wilora, Yuendumu (two patrols: a men’s and a women’s), and Yuelamu. All teams are supplied with vehicles, radios and uniforms, and received appropriate training in four-wheel driving, occupational health and safety, numeracy and literacy, and team leadership. In 2009 tenders were called for the supply of Night Patrol Base Offices at Nyirripi, Willowra, Yuendumu, Yuelamu, Engawala and Wilora.
Performance Indicator Reports and a reviewed and updated Operational Plan were forwarded to the federal Attorney General’s Department – the funding body for Night Patrol – as required. An improved Pictorial Incident Report to reflect statistical data was also designed.
Interest to join night patrols is strong, with many CDEP participants eager for placement. Police have actively supported patrols on an ongoing basis.
