Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) has three finalists in the 2019 Territory Tidy Towns Sustainable Awards this year – Laramba, Ti Tree and Wilora. The winners will be announced on 29 November.
The Community Development Program (CDP) men’s team at Laramba have been busy with their Tidy Towns preparation ahead of the judging. They have been collecting rubbish around the streets near the activity centre and collected the hard rubbish in the area like old mattress and car parts.
Ti Tree have also been busy with preparation for the competition. It’s not just about cleaning up, it’s about recycling too.
A team of seven students from Ti Tree School has been selected to become the Ti Tree School Recycle Rangers. Click the attachment below to see a photo of them.
The team has started to manage the school’s new recycling facility that has been provided by CDRC. The students have been trained in sorting bottles and cans into the large bags ready for transport to the Alice Springs Environbank Recycling depot.
Students across the school have designed anti-litter and recycling posters which are displayed on many wheelie bins used across the Pmara Jutunta and Nturiya communities to promote positive actions for environmental health.
Good luck to each of the finalists!
The Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) Community Development Program (CDP) team in Yuelamu have started the month of November off with a bang.
The men have been working together to improve the roads in Yuelamu by filling in potholes and gaining skills that may help them to get jobs.

At the last funeral in town Nick Muirhead, CDP Activity Supervisor, noted that there was no table strong enough to support a coffin. He found some scrap steel that he and his CDP men’s team built into a sturdy base for a large solid table.
Once the large tabletop is on, the community will have a great table to use for future funerals. Well done to the CDP team for giving back so much to your community and being clever enough to build and create something using all recycled scrap metal and wood. Thank you for your hard work.
In early December CDP will be starting a section of the CDRC Road Traffic Installation project in conjunction with the CDRC Municipal Works team. This project will involve installation of correct signage and road traffic furniture making Yuelamu a lot safer for the residents.
Additionally, CDP will be assisting with fencing the Granites Mine Affected Area Aboriginal Corporation (GMAAAC) playground upgrades for North and South Park. They will build their skill set further by having the Works team share their experience and knowledge, while also helping to keep Yuelamu safe and fun for the kids.
Not only have the men been busy though. The CDP Women’s Team have just designed and painted a sign to reflect the new opening hours for the Yuelamu Store.
Tammi, the Yuelamu Store manager, has consulted with Nick and the CDP women participants who’s next project will be to create a mural reflecting our local indigenous women’s art and will cover an entire wall of the interior of the shop.
