Willowra has just had a new landfill pit created at the landfill, one kilometre south of the community. It will be a way to safely dispose of rubbish over the next seven years.
Breaking ground on 29 October, two 25 ton excavators over four days were used to create the pit, which included making ‘benches’ around the sides, making it look like a stadium. The benches are for the safety of workers when they are in the pit, making the sides stronger.
“This is a text-book landfill pit,” said Shane Coleman, Waste and Environmental Manager for Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC). “We’re very happy with it.”
