Central Desert Regional Council’s final handover of the Stronger Futures Northern Territory Housing Refurbishment Program at Nyirripi will occur on Monday 30 May, 2016.
 
The Council will be handing over the last of the 43 houses commissioned by the NT Department of Housing to receive major upgrades in the community.   To celebrate this significant achievement, a ceremony and BBQ will be held at the Council Office at Nyirripi. Council President Adrian Dixon, CEO Cathryn Hutton along with Local Authority members will be welcoming the Minister for Housing Bess Price and the Central Australia Executive Director of the NT Department of Housing Michael White.
 
The event will showcase all the hard work Central Desert Regional Council and local community members have put in over the past ten months to provide the people of Nyirripi with fully refurbished housing.
 
The program began in August 2015 and has seen 40% of all worked hours being done by Indigenous people, mainly local, including Council’s municipal services crew and three community members gaining continuous paid employment with CDRC sub-contractor Roustabout Construction. Roustabout Construction’s owner, Ian Hackett said “It is great to see community members interested in working with my crew and participating in the construction phase. The skills they learn whilst working in houses can be used outside this project anywhere in or out of the community”.
 
Council President Adrian Dixon believes that this project demonstrates the strong capacity of the Council.  “Council has proved we are well placed to support local people transitioning into meaningful employment.  This project has seen local people upgrade their own houses and gain meaningful skills as well as real jobs.   We believe Council has a strong role to play in future changes to housing management in our remote communities” he said.

Community Development Program workers have participated in works throughout the contract on various jobs such as painting, cleaning and fitting. To encourage local engagement, Central Desert Regional Council, working with Ngurratjuta Aboriginal Corporation, has provided training through CAT (Centre for Appropriate Technology) in the following certificates:

• Cert I in Construction (White Card)
• Cert II in Civil Construction Plant Operations
• Cert II in Construction Pathways
• 4WD Awareness
• Applying First Aid

- the programs, projects and activities that the Council will undertake in coming financial year

- how Council will fund its budget including information about changes to general and conditional rates.
