Defending Central Desert Shire Softball Champions, the Yuelamu Eagles, are gearing up to defend their title. More than twenty talented young women took to the training track last week in their first step to the NT Championships in Darwin.
Last year the Eagles won the Central Desert Shire Championship before winning their Territory wide division in Darwin.
The competition will be hotter this year with teams from Yuendumu, Nyirripi and Willowra all entering the competition. Teams from as far North as Lajamanu will also be joining the championship 2013 making the contest even tougher.
Five divisions across the Central Desert Shire will compete in home and away rounds over the next two months. The winning teams from each division then compete in the Central Desert Shire Softball Championship.
Shire President Adrian Dixon is excited about the championships. “The league is run as part of the Shire’s Youth, Sport and Recreation Program. The aim is to provide women with a fun, friendly and well organised sporting event. The stakes are high though with bragging rights on the line, not to mention the winner receiving support from the Shire to compete in Darwin in August.” Mr Dixon said
Mr Dixon says that the Eagles shouldn’t get ahead of themselves. “To qualify for the championship the Eagles must win their division which means beating my side, the red hot Laramba Roos who won the Santa Teresa Sports Weekend in March. They’re strong, they’re good”, Mr Dixon said.
The Central Desert Shire Championship is held from 20 April to 29 June 2013. The season kicks off on 20th April 2012 with the Laramba Roos hosting the defending champions Yuelumu Eagles.
