NAIDOC Week Yuelamu Art Competition

Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC), with help from Mt Allen School’s Principal Phil Bartley and the teachers, are running an artwork competition in Yuelamu as part of their NAIDOC week celebrations.

The school has incorporated the competition into their classes and the students have created posters, clay bowls, canvas works and modeling clay model huts of local bush camps to enter the competition, with the assistance of the teachers and local teachers’ aides.

“This year Yuelamu is having four categories as the artwork created by the youth of Yuelamu is amazing and too hard to pick one winner,” said Tammi Booker, CDRC Community Services Coordinator (CSC) in Yuelamu.

The store manager, clinic nurses and a visitor have been asked to pick the winners for the four prize categories. The store and Danny Orr Contracting have donated a prize each for two of the categories and CDRC will donate a prize for the other two categories.

The winners of the competition will be announced at this year’s CDRC NAIDOC week celebration on Tuesday 7 July at 10am, after the CDRC holiday on the Monday to mark NAIDOC week. There will also be a flag raising ceremony and a barbecue to add to the festivities.

CDRC Yuelamu Administration Officer Norman Hagan has assisted in creating a Local Art Gallery in the CDRC meeting room. The community can view the youths’ NAIDOC artwork over three weeks ending at the conclusion of NAIDOC week 2020.
