During May, the centre came alive with the sights, sounds and textures of the ocean and ocean life, as part of World Ocean Day celebrations.
The celebration started with a fun story time, reading “It's Time for Slime” and chatting about sea creatures. Keisha pointed out a jellyfish, and Arzalea spotted a seahorse. Children like Joseph, Sheila, Johnny, and others eagerly named different colours of ocean animals, showing great colour recognition!
They also had a fantastic colour sorting maths activity using ocean animal figures, where children confidently sorted animals by colour, boosting their cognitive and fine motor skills.
A creative silhouette painting session let the children explore and recognise various ocean animals, enhancing their fine motor skills, visual recognition, and language development. These activities strongly align with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), supporting the children's identity, connection to their world, wellbeing, confidence, and communication skills.
To extend the learning, a small ocean-themed learning space was created with sea animals, sand, books, and puzzles, encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor skills.
What's next? The childcare centre plans to introduce digital learning experiences with educational videos about the ocean and conservation, making learning even more engaging!
The World Ocean Day activities provided rich, hands-on experiences, fostering fine motor skills, cognitive abilities, creativity, and environmental awareness among the children.
