Economic Development

The Central Desert Regional Council is committed to supporting economic development in the region. We work with a range of stakeholders, including government agencies, businesses, and community organisations, to create a vibrant and sustainable economy.

LAUNDRY

Ti Tree and surrounding regions have a number of existing and planned mining operations. These mining operations require commercial laundry services which are currently largely delivered outside the Northern Territory. CDRC is in the process of building and operating a commercial laundry in Ti Tree to service the mining industry, and to provide ongoing training and employment to Aboriginal people residing in Ti Tree and smaller satellite communities. The project aims to contribute to the economic development of Ti Tree, a region identified as a growth area in the NT. Council’s application to obtain a grant is in progress now.

NT TINY TOWN AWARD FOR YUENDUMU

Yuendumu was declared as the Northern Territory winner of the Top Tiny Tourism Award, and therefore also the NT finalist in this category of the Australian Top Tourism Awards. The Top Tourism Town Awards recognise the value of tourism to towns and communities across Australia and celebrates the diversity and outstanding regional destinations of our country.

PACIFIC AUSTRALIA LABOUR MOBILITY SCHEME (PALM)

The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme allows eligible Australian businesses to hire workers from nine Pacific islands and Timor-Leste when there are not enough local workers available. Through the PALM scheme, eligible businesses can recruit workers for short-term jobs for up to nine months or long-term roles for between one and four years in unskilled, low skilled and semi-skilled positions. CDRC has applied to become the approved employer under this scheme to deliver services in our communities where hiring workers have become extremely challenging in certain areas. CDRC is aiming to complete projects in the communities in a quicker way so that our community members have the right service at the right time. It is also aiming to cut down the cost in mobilising the resources through sub-contractors in executing various projects. The cost saving can be used to fund other projects and services in the communities.

DESTINATION INFORMATION SIGNAGE-TI TREE

Ti Tree is the only township between Tennant Creek and Alice Springs and a lot of tourists go past by the town on a daily basis. Council in consultation with the local community have installed a signage board in between Ti Tree Park and the entrance of Spencer Street. The signage shows the history of Ti Tree, places to visit, the establishment of the well etc. which attracts tourists into the community.
